This region north of the Mentawai is holding world-class surf in the Telo Islands, the Banyaks, and the Hinakos.

These islands off the coast of Northern Sumatra seem to have an unending supply of reef breaks and can often be less crowded than the more popular breaks in the Mentawai islands to the south.  Situated perfectly to catch an abundance of Indian Ocean swell with reefs facing all different directions creates a situation where there always seems to be at least a few waves working under any and all wind and weather conditions.

There are two ways to experience the Telo, Banyaks and Hinakos islands:

By Sea

Bohemian Baru offers one directional charters between Sibolga on North Sumatra down to Padang on Central Sumatra.  These charters hit all the best spots in the Telo, Banyaks and Hinakos Islands on way from Sibolga to Padang or vice versa.  As always, yacht charters provide Waterways travelers the most flexibility to move throughout the island chains based on surf conditions.

By Land

If you prefer to stretch your legs, have the privacy of a bungalow, take your meals in a proper dining room or are traveling with a “significant other” a land-based resort operation is now a great option at Aura Surf Resort or Surfer’s Village.  Each of these land based resorts offers boat shuttle service to the breaks in their immediate areas.

Whether you prefer to access these waves off Northern Sumatra by yacht charter or surf resort, WaterWays has you covered.
