This Costa Rica surf charter, Witch’s Brew has the style of a Mentawai or Maldives charter, but with a Pura Vida flavor.
Costa Rica Surf Charters vessel, Witch’s Brew, is a beautiful replica of a classic Grand Banks Trawler that was custom built by Fibroplastico SA in San Jose, Costa Rica in 1996. Rigged to explore all the surf-filled nooks and crannies of Costa Rica and Nicaragua, this 52-foot motor yacht is powered by two, 135 horsepower Cummins turbo diesel engines that give it a cruising speed of 10 to 12 knots.
This is the best way to explore Costa Rica, as a surf charter eliminates all the hassles of renting cars, staying in hotels, and worrying about your gear while you’re out surfing. Most of all it eliminates those teeth-jarring panga rides that take hours to get to a spot, usually arriving a little too late, and leaving a little too early.
Charter a surf trip on the Witch’s Brew and you will wake up to good surf, get in a solid session before everyone else shows up in their ‘day boats’. Take a nap, have lunch and then paddle back out around 3:00pm as the other surfers are all paddling to their pangas to head back home.
Home ported in Playa Del Coco in the northern Pacific region of Guanacaste Costa Rica, only 30 minutes from Liberia International Airport & 1 hour from the famous surf town of Tamarindo. Witch’s Brew goes north 20 miles to Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point, and has the range to go all the way up to southern Nicaragua.
Our Costa Rica Surf Charters vessel has three staterooms that can sleep six very comfortably. There are two bathrooms with showers, a full kitchen, new stove & refrigerator, a salon with a new 30’ flat screen TV & hard drive with over 1200 movies, new 8 speaker Bose sound system, and lower and upper pilothouses. Relax inside or on the fully cushioned bow deck. Topside consists of a spacious sundeck complete with cushioned bench-style seats in the shade of the upper pilothouse – some guests like to sleep outside, under the stars, far from the mosquitoes.
Our Costa Rica Surf Charters vessel meets Coast Guard standards with lifejackets, fire extinguishers and first aid equipment. Other recent upgrades to the vessel include a brand new 1500 BTU air conditioner, new rudders & propellers, new cutlass bearings, new transponder including depth gauge, GPS, plotter, radar, etc… In addition to all of the modern safety and electronics, she is equipped with water pumps for both fresh & raw water, all new flooring, BBQ and a 30HP outboard engine for the fiberglass skiff.
Our Costa Rica Surf Charter focuses on the region of Santa Rosa National Park that contains Witch’s Rock, Ollie’s Point and Southern Nicaragua.
The two main breaks in the Santa Rosa National Park are Witch’s Rock (aka Playa Naranjo) and Ollie’s Point (aka Potrero Grande). Witch’s Rock is a long stretch of beach breaks with a big offshore rock in the middle of it all. The sandbars at Witch’s Rock change with the flow of the estuary, but they benefit from consistent offshore winds from December to March.
Witch’s and can and does deliver pitching A-frame peaks for surfers of all levels. To the north of Witch’s Rock and even more inaccessible by land is Ollie’s Point. This right point break can be phenomenal with a solid size swell and howling offshores. There are also other rock slab breaks located inside the park when the conditions are right.
Around the corner and up the coast, Witch’s Brew also has access to the surf spots of southern Nicaragua. This is the area renowned for all-day offshores from the “Papagayo” winds blowing across Lake Nicaragua. Like Costa Rica, this coastline has a little bit of everything: Triple overhead reef breaks and beginner friendly beach breaks, with points, reefs and river mouths scattered along the coast.
There are only two seasons in Costa Rica, wet and dry. The wet season generally runs from May to November and is characterized by tropical showers with variable winds. The rainiest months are September and October with torrential downpours often washing out roads and riverbeds.
The dry season, December to April, brings consistent offshore winds and the coolest weather despite little to no rainfall. Water temps average 80 degrees year round.
Costa Rica is a good bet for surf any time of year. The Southern Pacific Ocean pulses energy toward Costa Rica’s Pacific coast year-round, although south swells are strongest from April thru September.
The northernmost part of Guanacaste from Tamarindo to the Nicaraguan border sticks out like an elbow and is more exposed to winter swells from November to April. This region of Northern Costa Rica also benefits from Nicaragua’s “Lake Effect” offshore winds that can blow all day, every day during the dry season.
