Melaleuca Mentawai Boat Charter OVERVIEW
There are two kinds of boats cruising the Mentawai for surf: local and foreign. If you want to save a few dollars, feel more comfortable and cooler touring in a locally-made boat, and have a larger group, then the Melaleuca is the way to go. Eighty feet long and built in Sibolga, North Sumatra in 2007, Melaleuca is a custom-built surf explorer framed around the keel and bones of a traditional Indonesian cargo boat.
The customizations begin with the power plant: two Mitsubishi 320 HP inboard diesel engines, with two Mitsubishi PS100 250 volt generators providing electricity and light and sound and A/C - all the modern conveniences from stem to stern.
The Melaleuca is traditional from the outside, but on the inside there are more electronic navigational and safety gizmos than a nuclear submarine: Furuno Radar; Furuno GPS; Furuno Echo Sounder; Kenwood SSB Radio; Icom VHF Radio; seven fire extinguishers; a 20-person capacity life raft; 20 life preservers; SSB and VHF radio communications; one EPIRB, flares, smoke and emergency alarms.
The Melaleuca is all about space. At 80’ long she has vast amounts of interior and exterior space to accommodate groups of 10 maximum in air conditioned comfort. As Melaleuca is an inexpensive charter option many groups take full boat charters with only 6-10 passengers. (see accommodations)
The boat is fresh but the skipper is seasoned: Ali Hendriana has 20 years experience as a Captain in Western Sumatra and the Mentawai.
And he’ll keep the billy warm.
