Ocean Oasis Yacht Charter, Central Atolls, The Maldives
Matt Warshaw wrote in the Encyclopedia of Surfing -“The glimmering turquoise-colored waves here rarely get over 10 feet and lack the power found in Indonesia or Tahiti, “but are shapely, perfectly groomed, and often hollow.” Although the Surf in the Maldives may not be as big and heavy as some spots in Indonesia, I am sure Matt only samples a small number of breaks. It is certain that on any good swell the Maldives and Central Atolls hold breaks to challenge any level of surfer.
The Surf Season runs from mid February to November, when low pressure systems in the southern Indian Ocean generate consistent swells.
The early part of the season has the most stable weather, with light, favorable winds. Swell consistency and size improves from February, with March, April and May having very clean conditions.
June to August have the most potential for big swells, although tropical storms can be more common in these months.
September and October are also very consistent months for swell, with winds less variable and tropical storms becoming less frequent. November is still quite consistent for small to medium size waves and the weather is usually perfect for a beach holiday.
The surf in this Central Atoll zone focuses primarily around 4 atolls: Laamu, Meemu, Thaa and Dhaalu. These atolls host a number of breaks that go by different names depending on who you talk to; some include Finnimas (L), Mikado (R), Machines (R), Malik’s (L) and Haymark (L). The one thing they have in common is they are all reef breaks and have the potential to serve up the best surf of your life. Our experienced surf guides will make sure you are in the right place at the right time.
